European Parents Celebrate International Book Giving Day

Celebrate International Book Giving Day on February 14th!
The International Book Giving Day is a day dedicated to getting new, used and borrowed books in the hands of as many children as possible. The European Parents' Association is celebrating the day by asking all parents in Europe and in other parts of the world to join. We have created a bookshelf on Goodreads where you can put the book or books you are giving away or recommend others to give to a child.

International Book Giving Day is aiming at increasing children’s access to and enthusiasm for books. Knowing the fresh PISA results and other research data showing that less and less children listen to tales regularly and less and less children read at least one book per year any responsible parent feels that something has to be done. On the 14th of February there is a big commercial pressure to give something to your loved ones for Valentine's Day. We say that giving a child a book is a much valuable and 'parently' idea than giving sweets, flowers or plastic hearts.
Thus EPA is encouraging all parents to celebrate the 14th February by joining the International Book Giving Day. We would also like to help parents in choosing books for the holiday. We are collecting bookish ideas here as blog comments, on Facebook, Twitter and the Goodreads bookshelf set up for the occasion (if you are not a Goodreads user, give us author's name, full title in your language and optionally ISBN. The organisers invite individuals to 1) give a book to a friend or family member, 2) leave a book in a waiting room for children to read, or 3) donate a gently used book to a local library, hospital or shelter or to an organization that distributes used books to children in need internationally.
International Book Giving Day is an international holiday. In 2013, International Book Giving Day was celebrated by people in Australia, Canada, South Africa, France, India, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the Philippines, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Nigeria, Nicaragua, Brazil, Egypt, Poland, Greece, Portugal, Mexico, Macedonia, Malawi, Hungary, Malaysia, Israel, Denmark, Thailand, Indonesia, Jordan, China, Puerto Rico and Bulgaria.
